After a chilly Melbourne Winter the clouds have parted and the sun is shining down on October’s variety of shows, festivals and activities all in time for the start of the 2015 Spring Racing Carnival. Find out what’s on in Melbourne this October.

The Melbourne Festival celebrates 30 years this year with festivities starting up on the 8th of October and running until the 25th of October. The Festival celebrates a premier collection of art and culture from around the world through dance, theatre, music, visual arts, multimedia and outdoor events from renowned and upcoming Australian and international companies and artists. The festival will be presenting over 74 events from an array of countries with eight world premieres, 17 Australian premieres and 15 events exclusive to Melbourne Festival this year. It is an event not to be missed.

The Finders Keepers Market is back. Started in 2008, the market is running again on the long weekend starting on Friday 2 October to Sunday 4 October. Located at the World Heritage listed Royal Exhibition building, the event will showcase tasty food and coffee stalls, an array of live music and over 10000 independent art and design artists. Expect a large crowd of people celebrating and supporting local arts.

Come and celebrate one of the most influential artists in music, film and fashion, at ACMI’s David Bowie Exhibition. With over a million people seeing his sell-out shows in London, Paris, Chicago and Berlin, the David Bowie Exhibition comes all the way from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. This exhibition showcases Bowie’s amazing work from being a live performer to being a screen star. Come see some of his 50 legendary costumes, hand-stitched lyric sheets, album artwork, video, photographs and interviews with collaborators. But you must hurry, as this exhibition finishes at the end of October.

As well-known British claymation figure Wallace once said “Gromit, that’s it! Cheese! We’ll go somewhere where there’s cheese!”. Instead of trekking to the moon for cheese visit the the Prahran Market Cheese Festival for another year of dairying festivities on Saturday 24 October. From pop-up cheese eateries, cheese tastings, Milk the Cow Fondue Tent, Meatmaiden Mac n Cheese Marquee and a cheese-wheeling race among the market traders. Keep any eye out for cooking demos from Masterchef’s Alice Zaslavsky, AKA, Alice In Frames. Whilst you are down there, why not explore in South Yarra and visit another of Masterchef’s alumni – dessert king Darren Purchese at Burch and Purchese – or sample the ever tempting Macaroons at Adriano Zumbo.

This month’s What’s On tips are brought to you by Les Clefs d’Or Concierge Paul Rumpff.
