Labour Day Weekend activities in Melbourne

Moomba Festival

Arguably City of Melbourne’s showcase event every year, Moomba festival is a synthesis of the city’s world class arts, sports and cultural scene tied together in one event. Infact, it’s Australia’s largest free community festival! Celebrating its 66th year on the Labour Day long Weekend in 2020, the longstanding event has many iconic traditions including the crowning of two popular Melbourne personalities’ as the King and Queen of Moomba each year. This year’s King and Queen are set to be comedian Nazeem Hussain and TV personality Julia Morris respectively. The Moomba festival is dubbed as a family friendly event with a myriad of activities to keep all ages engaged at the festival location along the banks of the Yarra River. Another traditional part of the festival is the Moomba Parade. This consists of colourful fun floats that are designed by children and community groups and vibrant music and dancing. The Yarra River acts as a centrepoint for adrenaline junkies (or spectators) in attendance, where water skiing and wake boarding are prominent on the water throughout the weekend.

Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival

The Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival is an 11 day event from March 4-14 at the March at the Royal Exhibition Building and Melbourne Museum precinct. It’s a big deal, and it’s getting funky. Not only is it Australia’s largest fashion event, it’s a space for beauty workshops, up-in coming local designers and experiential technology to liven up the event in new innovative and interactive event entertainment. VAMFF will bring alive the Royal Exhibition’s Building’s forecourt in the name of the Plaza. For fashion lovers or just the curious minded, this licensed area will provide the ideal space for you and your friends to drink, eat and soak up the runway, sights and general atmosphere of VAMFF.
