January: Your Holiday Planning Guide

We love Melbourne in January, summer is in full swing and the city plays host to a variety of events and activities. The Australian Open is a big draw card and runs for the last two weeks of the month. However, do not fear that that there is nothing to do in the beginning of the month, here is what is on our early January to do list.

Theatre & Shows

Circus 1903
Playing at the Regent Theatre from January 3 to 12, discover the golden age of circus starring mind-blowing puppetry from the award winning puppeteers of War Horse.

Kinky Boots
Closing at the end of January, this feel good musical is playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre. Written by Harvey Fierstein with music by Cindi Lauper you won’t be able to get the songs out your head.

Shopping
Take advantage of the post-Christmas sales and stock up on all the things you hoped to get for Christmas but didn’t or spend the gift cards your relatives gave you. From Emporium Melbourne to Melbourne Central and Bourke Street Mall, you can find all the big brands. Then wind your way through the cobblestone laneways and mosaicked arcades to visit boutiques and niche retailers.

Art of Banksy
Billed as the “questionable genius of the world’s most infamous street artist” see over 80 pieces of Banksy’s work at The Paddock at Federation Square.

Explore art at the National Gallery of Victoria, two must see exhibitions are Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists which unpacks wearable fashions and David Hockney: Current who is often regarded as Britain’s greatest living painter.

Moonlight Cinema
December 8 to April 2, 2017, Royal Botanical Gardens

Summer nights under the stars in the Royal Botanical Gardens watching a movie. Sound good? Screening nearly 20 advanced showings and 19 new releases, this is a must-visit summer attraction.

Plus, do not despair about movie snacks. The Moonlight Cinema is a BYO friendly event plus there is access to a fully licensed bar and the Moonlight Food Truck with will be serving LA style street food.

Summer Night Market
5pm to 10pm every Wednesday until March 8, 2017, Queen Victoria Markets

These Markets have been running for 19 years with an amazing array of global food stalls, curated bars, boutique and vintage stalls and attractions for all ages.

This shopping and eating event is enlivened with a large variety of buskers and roving entertainers scattered throughout the market as well as three live music stages.

To get there from the hotel, walk right to Williams Street and catch the 55 tram which will take you all the way there and back. Best of all, it’s within the free tram zone so you can save your money for the market.
